Car rent

Hi l hope you can help l hired l a car from Sixt last year in Pisa Italy ,when we retuned to the UK about a couple of months later l got a bill saying that the the tyre on the wheel has been damaged .l was very angry because why didn’t they get in touch sooner,we returned the car in the evening so we couldn’t really see anything wrong with the car and the tyres we didn’t look at so they have sent me a bill for 250 euros l have paid 70 of it but due to the current situation with me not working l can pay it ,now they have passed it to debt collecter and charge me even more,l am not sure what l have to do .l don’t feel there was any damages to the wheel in the first place they did sent me photo but l couldn’t see any thing ,why wasn’t the vehicle checked straight away and was l billed months later/and why have they got a debt collectors involved ,not sure what my rights are with this.
