Accidentally used the wrong email address, worried about being hacked.

Hi, I’ve accidentally used the wrong email address when ordering something online. I checked out as a guest and the email confirmation has gone to this address. I have ordered from this site before and the confirmation email has my name, address and mobile number on it. I’m now worried about being hacked, and wonder what I can do to protect myself. Thank you

Does the "wrong" email address exist and probably belong to somebody else?
If it might, try emailing it with a polite message asking if they received an order confirmation. Not much else you can do really. Your name and address are widely available, your mobile number less so. Chances are the email has gone into a bin somewhere. You could contact the company you ordered from and ask for an order confirmation to the correct email address, and that they change their records accordingly.

  • Yes I think so, I just missed one letter out of my email address so it went to another iCloud address.

How is it different? If you (for example) missed a dot (like name.surname@), some providers, like Google, ignore it altogether, so name.surname@google.com is the same as namesurname@google.com
That being said, the chances that you have found another active email address by simply changing 1 letter in your own email address are slim.

Send an email to that address. If it bounces back, you know that the email address doesn't exist.
  • I missed out the initial of my middle name, so it’s gone to another iCloud account without the middle name in. I know the address was taken when I set up my iCloud account.

Nothing you can do. If they're dodgy, asking them nicely not to be dodgy will have no effect, and if they're not dodgy then they don't need to be asked not to be dodgy.
Next time set up an account with the site so you aren't reliant on entering your email address every time you order.

Send an email to the address in question explaining what's happened and ask the person who owns the address to forward messages from this company to you?

If you made a manual note of the order number, you can contact the company and ask them to update their records?

If I were in your situation, I would contact the company as a matter of urgency.

I get this all the time, I have a very common email and get all sorts of things for other people.  I wouldn't worry about it, I just delete them.  If I got an email apologising and asking me to forward it on I would quite happily, not everyone is a hacker.
