Who is at fault my bank or credit card supplier?

in Credit cards
Nationwide Credit Card wrote to me at the start of the year saying as I hadn’t used it in a while, they were going to cancel it. I like to have a few cards with little or no balance for stoozing, emergencies etc etc. So I used it for a small transaction just to keep it activated. I also went into my DD setup and made sure it was set at “minimum payment” as I knew it wasn’t going to be used that often and that set up would clear a small amount in full or (if in an emergency a large amount) a portion of that...that way I’d always avoid any defaults...sometimes you can have other things on your mind, especially at the moment...so I always like to be safe.
fast forward, this morning I get a letter from Nationwide saying I missed a payment. Phoned them, they said payment was made ( £7.55 ) then reversed??? So I contact my bank, they said, no payment requested, no payment reversed, they check and said since there were no DDs taken for some time for Nationwide, it was dormant??? i.e. no longer set up.
As I had amended the DD on Nationwide to minimum amount, should they not have updated any schedule with my bank?
Nationwide as a gesture of “goodwill” have removed the £12 default charge, but say there may be a “Mark” on my credit rating with Experian and I would have to contact them to get it corrected??? Nationwide then said they would ask for the missed amount plus a subsequent transaction of £23, on the 19th (will actually be 20th April) for £30ish...then my card will be unblocked...
Meantime my bank have re instated the DD at my request to make sure the next DD doesn’t fail (not sure how else Nationwide we’re going to get a DD if they weren’t in touch with my bank)...but I still believe when I amended it on Nationwide that should have been communicated to my bank.
so confused...any ideas? I don’t want anything negative on my credit ratings....I’ve never had anything like this in my 45 years of owning a bank a/c and credit cards.
thanks everyone, stay indoors, stay safe and stay healthy!

No two ways about this one: Anything Free is not a Basic Right..it had to be earned...by someone, somewhere

It's not the fault of either your bank or the credit card company. The DD authority had expired after 13 months of consecutive non-use.
Keep any eye on your files and if a late marker appears, put in a complaint to Nationwide. However, one late payment on an otherwise well managed file is not a major concern.

What does the statement say about paying?
Whether this was received online or by post the statement will state if the payment will be collected by D/D or not.
If it does say that you have a strong reason to go back to them and get everything put back as the D/D never 'bounced'.
If not you are at their mercy as to what they will do.0 -
I think, as has been mentioned above, that it depends what was on your last statement regarding payment....?0
