Equifax dispute

Hi,

I raised a dispute with Equifax about a utility account that is negatively affecting my credit score.

The utility account is showing that I missed payments between 2015 and 2018 at one of my old addresses, however, I moved out of that address in 2011 along with my Dad and entire family.  Also, that utility account belonged to my Dad who has the same name as me. He paid all the bills and opened all such accounts under his name...not mine. I have never opened an account with this utility company in my life.

The utility company responded, "we have investigated your case and confirm our information is correct." Equifax have taken their word for it and removed their automatically generated notice of correction.

How do I remove this utility company from my credit report? Can I sue Equifax, the utility company or both for publicising wrong and damaging information about me?

Thanks.

You need to make a written complaint to the utility company, as they are reporting inaccurate data in your Equifax file.

Have you checked all three credit files?  Is the account reported on your Experian and TransUnion files too?

  • Equifax (Clearscore) are not very efficient.. You need to send them a correction notice, within your account..I have found hit and miss with them. TransUnion appear better.

Adding a notice of correction is the last resort and not advised

    Thanks for the replies, guys.

Experian are showing my score as "Excellent" but I didn't pay for their full report. TransUnion (credit karma) are showing my payment history as "Perfect" and I can confirm that all open/closed accounts belong to me...not my Dad.

It seems that Equifax are the only ones confusing my Dad and I with this one utility account. All other open/closed accounts are mine. Does that mean the utility company are innocent and Equifax are the ones at fault for not properly separating identity information for this one utility account? If so, writing to the utility company may prove fruitless.

I'll wait for the world crisis to end before contacting the utility company.

    Thanks again.

Contact both to cover all bases.
Ignore any references to “scores” or “ratings”

Equifax are the worst company to deal with, followed by transunion. They take forever and really mess you around. You need to hound them every two or three days for an update, be it on call or email. Its the only way and im speaking from experience.
