Marrige tax allowance

Options
Hi there I have just cancelled our marriage tax allowance as now due to Corona Virus my Husband is  no longer working and only receiving a basic state pension and I am now the higher earner due to an increase of hours but it says the change in allowance does not kick in until April 2021 does this mean I will be paying more tax from now until then,  will I get a refund I would call HMRC but I've got no chance of getting through at the moment and would be grateful of any advice. Many thanks

  • You may be able to change it to take effect from 6 April 2020 rather than 6 April 2021 but I would suggest you only do this by contacting HMRC and making it crystal clear what you want to do.  This should avoid the potential for it to be cancelled right back to when you first claimed.

Read the "If your income changes" section here,

    Just been through this.
The government gateway site is somewhat clumsy.  It seems you cannot cancel the current year.  Only next year or previous years.  I think you are going to have to phone them,
We tried to cancel what was then the current year, 2019/20 in late March.  It would not let us.  We solved that by waiting until it had ticked over to the new tax year, then logged in again and cancelled it as a "previous year"

As has been said you must contact HMRC personally by phone or if that is difficult by post. We tried to cancel online and to our horror MA was coming up as cancelled right back to the first year it started. We did unravel it satisfactorily by personal contact. Starting MA is easy, but once in it, you must plan ahead ie. a year in advance of stopping it if you can.
