American Express and Paypal

Please forgive me as I know the subject of using American Express with Paypal must be a recurring subject, however I am confused about the conflicting things I am reading and what the situation is if I where to pay with American Express today for an item with Paypal.
I just got the 5% back card. Went to pay for some items on ebay, and got that message about them having to convert pounds to dollars and American Express coverting it back. But Paypal say they will give these fees back.
What I want to know is will I definitely get those fees back, or is there a danger they won't and it will cost me more then 5%.
As I say, I have read conflicting reports. Some saying never pay with American Express, others saying they have got the fees back. I can't say I trust what Paypal say. But if people are finding that they are getting their fees back, then its probably safe to risk it.
Thank you.

For what it's worth, Paypal have always refunded me; on my statement I get the debit in dollars, and then a credit from Paypal straight underneath.
Incidentally, I've got an Amex and a Mastercard registered with Paypal; they will *always* default to the Mastercard whatever I do.
So if you have more than one card registered - make sure you check they are using the right one each time!
