Kettle went pop!

So I switched the kettle on and after a few minutes it popped loudly and the main consumer unit tripped.
Unplugged the kettle and re-set the CU, and all fine.
Cautiously started the kettle again, expecting it to either be dead or to trip the CU again, but... kettle worked fine.
This was yesterday and I've used the kettle multiple times since without problem. Also checked bulbs and other appliances in case it was something else entirely, but all seems fine.
Any suggestions?

  • Had it been used a little while before?  Perhaps overfilled a bit with water getting into the electrics?
