Is there point for NCD???

I recently entered my details on a comparison site to get some quotes for my car insurance.  I first entered 9+ years of NCD; then, leaving all other details the same but changing the NCD to 0years, I got another set of quotes.  Surprisingly, the top 3 quotes in the 0years NCD, have come out cheaper than the top 3 quotes with NCD.  So, what's going on? Do insurance companies really give a discount for NCD?  I ask, because I'm wondering if there is any point in paying an extra premium to protect my NCD.

Yes, they do. But there's a maximum to what each insurer will recognise, and the latter stages make far less difference than the early ones.

A recent renewal I had included the actual percentages that particular insurer give...

Make your own mind up on whether it's worth protecting.

Why were your premiums cheaper for 0 than full? No idea. But I bet a bit more digging would show it isn't quite as straightforward as that.

Thank you for that link you provided.  very interesting.  It would appear that the premium goes up after losing the NCD due to making a claim.  This, I can understand and seems reasonable to me.  However,  what perhaps I didn't make clear in my OP, is that, in my details, I entered for both the 9+ and 0years NCD, I said that NO CLAIMS have been made in the last 5 years.  But, I still would have expected that someone who has not driven for 5 years (hence not NCD) should pay a higher premium than someone with NCD.  But than perhaps someone with no NCD who held a driving license for over 40 years would not make much difference in the premium.  I should also add that the difference between the two comparisons is only a few pounds.

Are the quotes for 9yrs NCB and 0 NCB from the same company?

No - the top 3 quotes were from different companies.  It's as if the companies hierarchy swapped round.  Those who were in the top3 in the 9+ NCD, were further down the 0 NCD list, and those which quoted a higher amount in the 9+ NCD came on top for the 0 NCD.  As I said, the amount difference was small to make any judgement from the results.  .

I’ve had similar results with the 3 years I have on my second car.

When I needed to use my NCB on another car in January I just insured it with no NCB, and paid £30 less than I had in August with the 3 years.  Different company, and 5 months later so it’s not a direct comparison.

However a quick comparison now, at the same point with the same company, gives a £30 saving for 3 years NCB (£485-£455).  Which really doesn’t seem like very much.

Some companies will take on people with 0 NCB and others don't really want too.
You may even find that one of the clauses in the 0 NCD is you need a black box. Which clearly you do not with 9 years....

So you are not comparing like for like.

They didn't. But then again they did not say if it was the same companies or not.

It's a fair guess when putting zero NCD that companies used to taking on new drivers will be the lowest quotes. Many of which are tied to black boxes.
I guess we will have to see if the OP looked that closely at the quotes, or just looked at the headline £££.
