He's somehow gotten out today and I am devastated :-(
Not even sure when or how, we've been so careful to not let him get outside
Praying he's been here long enough to explore and find his way back
    I feel sick

Derek will be fine - just leave the door open and food within reach. When he comes back lots of cuddles and use a soppy voice to tell him off.

Isn't there a suggestion to put some of his litter outside so he knows where home is when he gets back?

Just to say, found the little git tonight, went for a midnight walk calling him, and up he trotted. The worry this animal causes me.
So glad you found him, I still remember the horrible sick feeling when my  (previous) cat went missing overnight (I found him the following day)
