Warning: Barclays Charges Increasing!

Barclays current account charges are increasing if you go over your agreed overdraft limit:
New charge is £25 per day for going £5 over your limit, plus £25 for each subsequent transaction which takes you £1 or more over that limit.
Kind old Barclays are however now only going to charge you ONCE per day.
They will also VERY GENEROUSLY waive ONE charge if you haven't exceeded your overdraft limit AT ALL in the previous 12 months.
How kind.

there are frequently threads of this nature on here .....They will also VERY GENEROUSLY waive ONE charge if you haven't exceeded your overdraft limit AT ALL in the previous 12 months.
you open an account and agree to certain rules .... even if you break those rules, they will let you off once.
seems pretty fair to me.Kind old Barclays are however now only going to charge you ONCE per day.
so you could do a bucnh of transactions on your card or write cheque without having funds for them. most banks would charge you for all the items that debit that day that take you overdrawn - barclays will charge you once.
seems pretty fair to me
dont see the problem.
all banks which subscribe to the banking code (which is all the major players as fair as im aware) will have their charges reviewed and monitored by the FSA and if they were found to be unfair or excessive they would be changed. this is the case
all they ask to do is follow some simple rules - do NOT spend money that isnt yours.
dont see the problem myself

Agreed and well said David. It annoys me how people can complain about charges which they have agreed to. Yes, the charges are excessive but thats not the point.
If you dont like the charges associated with the account, don't open the account. Or better still, follow the terms and conditions of the account. The banks do!

Why flame me for warning people of a change in Barclays terms?
Don't they make enough money already?British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
not flaming you iain
just pointing out that i disagree with your view that the changes are unfair
i then gave my reasons as to why i disagree.

Thanks iain for highlighting these changes, its useful to know what charges to expect if you happen to go overdrawn. A lot of people could "accidentally" go £5 overdrawn and be hit with £50 charges - especially with the reliance on direct debits and banks methods of applying debits before credits etc :mad:0 -
and banks methods of applying debits before credits etc
i dont know if you specifically refer to barclays here and maybe they are different but afaik all banks process credits before debits.

ok, apologies. think they are very much in a minority with that although i could be wrong (its been known to happen
). seems a pretty awkward way to run things

I am going through a divorce, disabled and on Statutory Sick pay. On the 08/06/05 I went £1.95 over the £25.00 buffer that Barclay's operate. This was for one day and my wages go in the following day. Barclay's charged me a £25.00 commission charge at 18:49 and despite me telephoning them would not cancel the charge.
I get £66.00 a week SSP. Barclay's by making this charge caused me to go £51.95 overdrawn. I will have approximately £14.00 to live on for a week, and I have to feed myself and my pets on that, while trying to pay my bills.
The manager concerned was Mr. Stephen Tyler at the Barclay's Manchester Contact Centre.Nobody ever said "I wished I had worked harder" on their deathbed.0
