Try using masking tape as a cheap alternative to labels
I do however think, oh I'll be able to tell what that is, defrosted 'gravy' turned out to be steak stew.

i'm waiting with baited breath for the answer - but thinking of its intended use, masking tape should come off easily. what a splendid idea, lil_me! i do label everying that goes into the freezer, but am really annoyed by the labels not even wanting to come off in the dishwasher. so i put new labels on top, and it gets messier and messier. this might be the perfect solution! i happen to just have bought a roll of masking tape for decorating, so here i go...."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0

if its in a plastic box u can use a permanent marker which can be removed with nail polish remover0
