How do I renew a Pine table?

In the house I have just bought there is a pine table about 20-30 years old. The top is badly marked with rings and scratches but the table is a good size and I have decided to try and renew it. I can sand the top to a good surface but what do I do then? Should I varnish, wax or oil it? Any ideas?

I think varnished pine looks really old and fairly naff
We have some waxed pine furniture which looks nice, you can get a range of colours and can build the colour up to get the exact shade required.0 -
