Treat new MDF shelves for garage to prevent mould?

Hi there,
We're due to get some new garage shelving with MDF shelves delivered this week to try and sort out the state that is our garage!

I've read online that MDF shelves are prone to growing mould and mildew, etc.

I just wondered if anyone had any recommendations for treatments to use before I build up the racks to try and help prevent mould growth.

I don't think my garage is particularly damp but it surely makes sense...prevention better than cure and all that.

Thanks in advance :-)

Untreated, standard MDF tends to absorb moisture and if wet will expand and lose strength.

If the garage is well built, dry and free of damp then I wouldn't worry, but if it could get damp then I'd seal it with either an oil based paint or gloss, something to waterproof it. It can be quite absorbent so may want to prime it first, depending on what quality of finish you're aiming for.

Certainly paint the shelves, and definitely use a primer first. Unless the MDF is real thick, don't put heavy items on the shelves.

My OH painted ours which are hardboard rather than mdf with a Ronseal external grade satin varnish. It was described as clear on the tin, but dries a light brown which wasn't a problem for us, but may or not be for others.
