Potentially mis-sold car insurance?

Hi
I bought an imported car, and prior to doing so, I contacted an insurance company to ask if they could insure it. I gave them the relevant details and they said "yes we can insure it" I told them it was imported at the time too
Now they're saying it looks like we can't insure it, however they'll have a look at my V5 and see if it can be insured. Initially they were going to cancel my policy with immediate effect, until they phoned me back asking me to send my V5 in via email. I almost spent another load of money, as they called back just in time!
Should they find that the insurance is still not valid, and they cancel, what happens then? Would I also have to declare that I've been refused insurance? What can I do when I've called them, getting them to confirm, twice, that they can insure it, and them now saying "Oh actually we can't insure it"

It will not go down as a refusal as it is purely something they are not willing to cover but I would get them to confirm that in writing because some insurers are pretty hopeless at admin, especially amongst the "specialist" insurers. If they do refuse to insure I would expect them to either cancel from inception and you should get a full refund or cancel with immediate effect where I would expect you to be charged strictly pro rata on a daily basis with no charges.

Was it already UK registered when you bought it and insured it? And you fully declared what it was, and any modifications?
Have they actually started the policy, then decided to withdraw cover?0 -

Good news btw. Given that they lead me to believe they can insure it, they'll allow cover for this year0
