Council Tax

Starting in October I will be a full time student with the OU. I will still be working full time too.
Due to my full time status at the uni I will be exempt from council tax (this has changed in recent years to include full time OU students), however when looking at the forms from Portsmouth council it’s asking for my LL’s details. I don’t understand why they need this information I’ve lived here for over 3 years and have not been asked for my LL’s details before?

As far as council tax goes it doesnt really matter. The owners details are registered with Land Registry anyway.0

How does that answer the question?0

The council want the details so that they can ensure their records are up to date.allypally26 said:Starting in October I will be a full time student with the OU. I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
But they didn’t need them when I moved in three years ago or at anytime since. They also didn’t request the details when I request a single person’s discount.Checking all other forms for council tax it seems they only want the LL’s details when you are applying for exemption as a student.0

Ok the council want the details because they've decided that holding such details would be compliant with GDPR. I suspect it's part of a policy to ensure that HMOs are suitably registered and standards maintained, as often student properties are let out for specific terms and to lots of people.allypally26 said:How does that answer the question?
I was trying to reassure you that there's no impact on you for providing these - assuming you've got a legitimate tenancy.
Ultimately no-one outside of the council can give you a 100% accurate answer.0 -
I don’t live in a HMO it’s a two bedroom flat.0

No, but the council arent going to have a whole separate form for different sized properties. I dont know if that's the reason in anycase, but it's a best guess.allypally26 said:I don’t live in a HMO it’s a two bedroom flat.0 -
Why do you care? Just fill in the form and get on with your life!

Landlords are notorious for not keeping their details updated, My council has recently updated all our forms as a report had 45% mismatched addresses for landlords, Your council may have done a similar exercise0
