National trust holiday cottages

We had a holiday booked with National Trust for one of there cottages which we paid for in full before the lock down. Due to the Corona virus the national trust have closed all there cottages. They have to offered to allow us to rebook up free of charge, up to 24 months in advance, but if we cancel then we will  lose most of our money. We are not sure we want to re-book due to the ongoing Corona virus threat and also we could do with the money back. Can we insist on a full refund?

At first glance this is obscene. I realise there may be more to it than I can see here. Assuming that you paid NT for the use of one of their cottages, what possible reason  can there be for not offering a refund?  NT is a professional organisation and is partly reliant on the goodwill of volunteers to carry out its work. Why jeopardise that goodwill? Moreover, NT does not have to await monies returned from airlines, hotels abroad or difficult landlords. NT is not making clear to people that if NT closes its own cottages, a refund is automatically due.  Vouchers and re-bookings are secondary options for those who want to move their dates. At the end of the day the choice is for you, I would be insisting on a refund.

You're not the only one. Take a look on Trip Advisor! It's outrageous they're trying to force our hands to postpone our booking or lose 75% of the total amount we paid! I'd expect this kind of behaviour from some grotty B&B but not from a massive respected organisation like the National Trust! National Dis-Trust more like!
