Using a box to record TV is better.  Some TV's have recording but the functionality is normally limited compared to the boxes.  A recording box will do what you want and work with any TV.

My LG TV would record to a USB stick or external Hdd  but it was clunky and nowhere near as slick as using  dedicated box - I'd stick with the sepearte box if you can!

Most smart TV's will do that if you connect a separate USB hard drive, but because they only have a single tuner, you cannot watch one channel while recording another, unless you use a separate Freeview recorder.
Why not just use on-demand? I've not recorded anything to my Humax for a couple of years now.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

On-demand comes with adverts on the commercial channels.  I always think that one main advantage of the Humax is that you can skip through these.
OD also requires a continuously working internet connection.  Living in a rural area, this can not be relied on.
