turned down for NatWest credit card

Having switched and opened a new account with NatWest, I applied for a credit card but was turned down. I'm surprised as my credit score is 991/999, which is high and I have always paid off my credit cards in full when due. I also hold a card from my previous account with Halifax. It seems that my monthly income is too low for NatWest (I'm self-employed) although I have no expenses and no debts (my husband is a high income earner.) Is there any way I can appeal this or do I just have to accept it?

You can appeal but banks usually don't change their minds.
I wouldn't take rejection too harshly, maybe you don't tick all the boxes that NatWest want in a credit card customer. Try another card provider like MBNA or Barclaycard they do great cards, they offer you to check beforehand without doing a full credit search to see if you will be accepted.

Make sure you check your three credit files. Your 991 credit score (or any other score you may be given) isn't a factor in lending decisions, so make sure you check all the data instead.1

How many other credit cards do you already hold?1

Self employed are always a higher risk group, given we’re in a downturn I’d think it’ll be difficult to get a credit card as a self employed person right now0

Nat West are the worst bank I've ever dealt with.
You may not set much store in Trust Pilot but 83% 'bad' on c. 2000 reviews indicates something pretty serious with their processes & attitude... https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/www.natwest.com

Which has nothing to do with the OP's own circumstances.soulsaver said:Nat West are the worst bank I've ever dealt with.
