Sainsbury's staff get the biggest bargains!

I just got back from Sainsbury's, I couldn't believe what I just saw
The woman in front of me had loads of packs of chicken breasts, they're normally sold at £5.99 each or £7 for two packs - so if you pay full price the till rings up £5.99 + £5.99 - £4.98 = £7. However they were reduced to £1.50 each so the till showed £1.50 + £1.50 - £4.98 = -£1.98! In effect she was being paid 99p per pack to take the stuff away.
She had other shopping and when it was all rung up the total showed -£7.16!!! Amazingly neither she or the checkout girl noticed the minus sign and tried to process a credit card payment. Thanks to me they realised that the shop actually owed the shopper money.
Cue two gormless faces - the checkout girl was at the end of her tether and the dozy shopper went and got MORE chicken bringing the total to negative £12 odd. I suggested she get a few bottles of wine or something pricey to use up the credit but she complained that she had too much to carry. Boo Hoo!
Eventually she got a leccy toothbrush. She and her son staggered home with four bags they could barely lift for less than £2!!! I'm eaten up with jealousy now
I asked if there was any more cheap chicken on the shelves and she said it was a special offer for staff only - I hadn't spotted the uniform under her coat. I don't grudge her the freebies after all, goodness knows they don't get paid much and cheap food is a big help for families living on retail wages.
Oh well, I got a free bag of crisps that wouldn't scan because the poor girl on checkout was fed up and couldn't be bothered to ring for the supervisor
I'd rather have had the 14 packs of chicken...

If it was available for staff only, it was probably on its "use by" date, and she would have to be a bit canny to decide what to do with it. I just hope she has a large freezer!
I suppose perks of the job are due reward for the hassle she probably has when she's working.
Hope she's got a large family and a large slow cooker!(And knows about this site!
)
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

We were never allowed any of the bargains at Tesco. You had to buy them off the shop floor like everyone else. Although if you were on friendly terms with the butcher sometimes he would put a reduced piece of meat aside for you to collect later.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Have to say, my misdsus worked in Sainsburys until 6 weeks ago, and I've starved since! I have seen my chest freezer filled for £3.00. Pizzas for 10p each, chicken fillets for 10p, all sorts of stuff. If you have any sense, befriend the Sainsburys staff who carry the roll of orange stickers. They decide what gets reduced and by how much. Obviously towards the end of the night the prices get lower, but at that stage, they're normally happy just to get rid of the stuff. Don't be afraid to make them an offer, most of them are happy to oblige!I haven't been asked to tell you that I'm the Board Drunk for this board. As the night wears on, my posts will become worse, with simple spelling mistakes, inane ramblings, and a blatant disregard for the truth. I have no authority to do anything, so there's no point asking or telling me. If you see me past midnight, please tell me to get my coat and order me a taxi.

I had a part-time job in Sainsbury's years ago but I hated shopping there, I was office staff and if I went on the shop floor I'd get hassled by staff and customers alike and I never knew where the flipping eggs were! I probably lost out on loads of bargains
If I spot something on it's sell-by date I just ask politely if they'll knock half off, so far they always say yes. Closing time on Sunday is good for knock down prices, the poor orange sticker blokey is mobbed by little old ladies and me0 -
At Morrisons we get loads of out of date long life snacks for cheap. 10p for a multipack of crisps or nutrigram. Most people turn their nose up at this though. Not me
I remember the day they were selling boxes of Ferrero Rocher for 50p each.
A couple of weeks ago we had a visit from "Big People From Head Office" and to get rid of all the stuff that had accumulated and show us up, they sold off carrier bags of the stuff for 10p. In my bag were 5 flapjacks, 2 boxes of cereal (not out of date just squashed), a box of mr kipling cakes, and a multipack of iced jems. All for 10p! Took the cakes down on to my department for everyone to eat, and took the cereal home.0 -
My wife works at Sainsburys, we have had a few bargains in the past, but not as good as the 1st post, things like bread almost out of date, cheeze and large container of spread because it had Asda on instead of Sainsburys.
I wouldnt say its any better or worse than when she worked at same shop under different company, Safeway.

By strange coincidence, the first time I noticed this it was the same offer on chicken breasts. There is often a shelf in the store where the stuff about to run out of time is put and reduced. At about 7.20 pm a staff member comes and reduces all the prices by much more. The second time I encountered the negative price, I was in a different store and described the chicken saga; someone had 31 items for 11p. She said you've just done something like that as well; the pizzas I had were similar. Look for 2 for 1 offers or other combination offers; as the OP says, the original discount stays on. It isn't for staff only either.0

i ended up with sainsburys owing me money once as well. ginsters pastys were on bogof, but were also reduced to 25p as the date was close. with me being a somewhat portly chap as well as a student i decided i would have some of that and had about 12 for the freezer. when i got to the checkout they scanned them at 25p each, but the bogof discount was for £1.09 (full price), so i was actually being paid 84p to take each away!
its worth looking for in sainsbury's, until they update their till systems, or you come accross a checkout assistant that cares 5 mins before closing!
got some beer with the difference.  :beer:0 -
The best I've managed from Sainsbury's is 2 x 2 pint milk for 20p each. I keep looking out for the cheap meat...but I never seem to find any. I always suspected that the staff grab it all.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move
Lily contracted Strep B Meningitis Dec 2006  Now seemingly a normal little monster.
Love to my two angels that I will never forget.0
