Prom cars

Hi I have booked a car and paid £297 deposit for prom on 19th June and rest was due in the day I contacted the company to ask what would happen if prom was cancelled and they advised
Good morning Ruth,
Thank you for your email.
I can confirm that here at Anything For Hire, we are currently operating as normal and our operators have not yet confirmed that they are cancelling any bookings.
However, due to the unique circumstances we do appreciate that some customers may be wishing to postpone their booking or cancel it altogether so we do have a policy in place which I will include below.
We would be more than happy to transfer your deposit to an alternative date of your choice should you wish to postpone, subject to availability and a potential increase in cost. Please note that we do not need to know a date immediately as we are happy to wait for this due to the uncertainty surrounding our nation at this current moment. Just to confirm, we are not currently operating on a specific timescale and the alternative date will be entirely your choice.
In order for the deposit to be transferred to an alternative date, we will need to take a £85 amendment fee from yourself to get this secured. Without this payment, we will be unable to offer the transferable deposit and the booking will then fall within our normal cancellation procedure.
Please let me know by responding to this email if you do wish to cancel the booking in its entirety or if you are happy to pay the amendment fee to transfer the deposit to an alternative, unconfirmed date. Failure to confirm which option you wish to proceed with will result in the booking remaining how it is and puts yourself at risk of being liable for the outstanding balance should the vehicle be cancelled or the transfer of a deposit requested after 5pm on 19th May 2020.
I would also like to make you aware that if you are to accept the transferable deposit but fail to provide an alternative date or request cancellation after the £85 amendment fee has been paid, this can potentially result in yourself being liable for the outstanding balance of £257 as this will then fall within our normal cancellation policy.
Many thanks,
Jade Herring

If they cancel, they'd almost certainly have to refund everything you've paid.
If you cancel, it's a case of looking at the cancellation terms that you agreed to when you booked the car, to see what happens to your deposit, etc.
As you suspect, they may be planning to cancel anyway, but they are hoping that you'll cancel first, in order to keep your deposit.
Regarding 19th May date - presumably there is a term in the contract about cancelling less than a month before the hire date.

eddddy's correct. It looks like it's a "who blinks first" situation. To be fair to the company, 19th June is currently long after the government shut down comes to an end so as things stand, they are perfectly correct to state they will be able to honour your booking. It's probable that the current restrictions will be renewed, but for another few weeks only, still not heading into June.
I'd sit tight, pay the balance when it's due and wait and see what the government does and how the company reacts.0
