BT International Call Charges

Options
Normally my older brother who lives in Canada phones me at certain times as he knows, with the time difference, I am always available at a certain hour. Last weekend I had an email from my sister-in-law to say he had had a fall. So I decided to call him out of concern. We were on the telephone for about 15 minutes. After the call, I thought I'd look at my account to see how much the call would be. Presuming in this modern age that the charge would be around the £4-5 mark, I was astonished and angry that BT had charged £11 for the call!!
Obviously costs don't count where family members are concerned, but it seems a bit extortionate in this day and age when there is no human input necessary by BT. It must cost them pennies per call. I contacted them and they advised that the costs are described in their Residential Tariff (which they are) but they also suggested that I add International Calls to my calling plan. Of course 'there will be any extra charge'. They are getting enough out of me as it stands.Looking at mobile providers it appears that it is cheaper for me to use my mobile to call instead of my landline!!

... or use one of the Finera companies (18866/1899/18185?) if you prefer the good old fashioned 'dog and bone'!

Seems a bit strange to moan about costs when there are a number of  cheaper alternatives to be had. Perhaps this was just a penalty for declining to do any research?
