Why are they making (or trying to make) manual payments rather than automating it?

No human required for a bank transfer. It's all electronic. Only human required is the one entering the details.

One possible option is OP has never made a transfer before and it requires setting up at nationwide end. Or Op needs to select pay business that is listed on the system and will have account details pre filled to stop errors & not pay a person.
