If you do a google search the Astras leak like sieves. people are always changing o-rings, hoses, header tanks and even the inlet manifold to try and cure it.

Fiestas & fusions are well known for the header tank distorting and blowing coolant out of the cap, you can buy new header tanks pretty much everywhere and they are cheap.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

you wont get any milky colour instant but rare chance you get the symptom to say its gasket doesn't always work like

my dad car had similar issue and i told him your gasket is on its way and the engine gaps next to the pistons be filling with coolant and then fill into the oil so 2 month later engine was filled with water and milky oil cap

    OP,

My son had a similar’ish problem to yours several years when he owned his Astra Sxi. His engine was using lots of coolant,...however he didn’t have engine power problems though.

Easy for me to say from the comfort of my armchair but, given the details you’ve supplied, the coolant loss and 2nd gear power issues are probably??? unrelated.

On the advice of a professional mechanic friend of mine (who has owned his own 1-man garage repair business for 35 years) we resorted to a product called ‘K-Seal’. It’s a ‘coolant leak’ repair fluid. (‘Radweld’ is a similar product.)

It really is an amazing product...if it works!...no guarantees though.

The stories about Radweld/K-Seal blocking up small pipes and causing engine/heater damage seem to abound... however, they are nothing more than ‘apocryphal tales’ according to my mechanic mate. He’s never seen, or heard, of a genuine instance where this has happened....and he’s used K-Seal successfully for many years.

If K-Seal (or Radweld) fixes the problem it’s £10 well spent...if not it’s £10 wasted;.... if it works it works.....if it doesn’t it doesn’t;...it worked perfectly for my sons Astra Sxi for almost a year (6000 miles) until he sold it.

Coincidently, my son now owns a GTC 2.0Sri Auto and it’s been faultless since he bought it,...fortunately no leaks on his GTC whatsoever,....not yet anyway!

With due respect to the gurus on this forum, you may find it advantageous to cast your net further and post your question on here:

It’s a specialist GTC forum,...plenty petrol-heads and professionals on that forum,...used it a number of times myself and found the guys on there to be extremely helpful/knowledgeable.

The other place you could be losing coolant is the water pump. If the pump is accessible down the side of the engine run the engine for 30 seconds then switch off so still cold. Now feel under the water pump for any wetness. When the bearings start to fail water pumps weep from the drain hole under the pump. The coolant tends to evaporate so no puddle.

I really would not use rad weld or k seal unless you have no intention of keeping the car past a few weeks time.

I have used Radweld before, and it didn't destroy the engine in weeks, or even several years.  It works for tiny leaks, but don't expect miracles.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
