Types of toilet cistern

Options
Hi, Have got a problem with a toilet cistern. It is cracked and leaking. The present one is a close coupled on and I would like to replace replace with the same type. My question is what is the physical difference between a low level cistern and a close coupled one?  Are they, interchangeable, the same, or is there some actual difference between them? I would have gone up to B&Q etc to have alook but everyone is closed.
I will obviously be leaving the existing close coupled toilet in place.
Many thanks.

I can't answer your questions but I will ask if repairing the cracked cistern is possible, even if as a temporary measure?

Can you drain the cistern and use epoxy resin or another waterproof product to seal the cracks?
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

A close coupled cistern sits on the rear of the pan and the water enters via a (sealed) opening between the two.
A low level (and high level) cistern is connected via a pipe that normally enters the pan at the rear.
Depending on the make & model of your close coupled pan, it may be possible that a low level cistern will fit on, but you may have to drill new fixing holes in the wall. A new close coupling kit will certainly be needed, and cold water feed may also require adapting.
Here is one Screwfix says can be used with a close coupled pan in the Q&A - https://www.screwfix.com/p/thomas-dudley-ltd-acclaim-bottom-entry-dual-flush-lever-cistern-9ltr/8836f
