Refund On Closed Credit Card From Foreign Airlines

I purchased tickets to go to Ko Samui this April but due to all flights being cancelled I am seeking a refund. The problem is the flights were purchased in June 2019 and the credit card I purchased them on is a closed account with Llyods and has been for 3 months. I know that refunds have been issued by EVA airlines and Bangkok Airlines but they haven’t appeared on my credit card statement which shows a zero balance as it’s been closed. I spent 4 hours getting through to Llyods who said the funds would just bounce back to the airlines, my problem is I can’t get the airlines to make a payment to a different card so I have no idea how to get the money back. It’s circa £2500 so a lot of money. Please can anyone tell me what my rights are in this and who I go to first to get anywhere.
Thanks in advance,
Debbie

It should end up with Lloyds and generate a credit balance.
    When was the refund sent?

Not if the card was closed surely?

It doesn't normally create a credit balance (presumably the card would need to be reopened to do that?), but it gets placed in a holding account and you can get Lloyds to transfer you the money.

No idea why they're saying it will bounce back. I'd guess it's more likely that they didn't know what they're talking about than Lloyds have deviated from the standard procedure for this.

No. It should reopen the account. Or it will hit a internal account, which often is linked to the old card.

For future reference it is unwise to cut up/cancel CC when you have used them for flights. I cut one up as I only used it for 0% purchase and the deal had run out - I very nearly missed out on a holiday as Oman Air insisted on seeing the credit card I had booked with at the check in desk. I found this out a couple of days before and managed to get a replacement card sent which arrived on the morning of the flight.

  • Just wondering if there was any resolution to this? We had flights booked with Ryanair in April, they have informed me the money has been refunded to a New Day card which I cleared and closed in November (I'd forgotten I'd booked the flights using this card) so New Day don't have any account info for me. They gave me a PO Box address to write to which I did 2 weeks ago but nothing since.
