I'm at the stage now that I need to dye my hair.  I've decided on Loreal semi permanent hair dye, if I don't like it, it will eventually wash out.  I've never dyed my hair before, always been to the hairdressers, I'm a little worried about doing it myself.

A few things I'm not sure about so any advice would be gratefully received.
i know you have to do a test an allergy test and leave it on for 48 hours.  Do you have to open the actual dye for this or do you get a small amount to do it?  If you have to mix the actual dye for this surely you can't leave it for 48hours mixed up before you dye your hair?
ive been told by a friend to go a shade lighter that what I think, but it's going to fade anyway when I wash it, am I right?
Do you wash your hair the day before and is it best not to have any products on it, i.e. mousse and hairspray.
Lastly, I'm a little worried when I wash it out over the bath I could stain the bath and groutingi, both white, any tips.

Yes you do mix up the dye for this and just leave it I think. If it’s casting creme gloss you’re using I have a super sensitive scalp (multiple allergies) and I’m fine with it, just for reassurance, but definitely do the patch test!

The colours are never quite the same on you as they are on the box anyway. You could do a strand test at the same time as the patch test just to see? But I guess the question is what do you hate most. Like I know darker looks worse on me so I always would choose to go lighter personally, but if you would rather be darker then go that way

My hairdresser always says its better to dye hair when it isn’t newly washed as it takes better, so just do it whenever your normal wash cycle would be. I would avoid products if you can, probably doesn’t make much of a difference but why take the risk
Lastly, I'm a little worried when I wash it out over the bath I could stain the bath and groutingi, both white, any tips.
For me the bath is ok but the grouting can stain a bit. I usually kneel at the side of the bath and use the shower head attachment to rinse it off, that way it’s only over the bath itself and not on the grout. Also rinse everything down straight away afterwards of course.
To be honest there’s only so far wrong you can go, so go for it.  But as before, be prepared to just sit down and wait while it takes, have everything out and do NOT fiddle around cleaning the bathroom, as sure as anything you will touch your head off paintwork somewhere and mark it. I speak from much experience!

belfastgirl23, thank you for replying.  Yes I'm just going to have to go for it. Husband will help, he says he put it on and he can make sure I've washed it all out.  I'll let him clean up afterwards then beings I'll be incapacitated. 😁😁

I'm doing it tomorrow.  Had a Tesco click and collect Monday, decided on semi permanent chocolate truffle brown, they picked cool  brunette, husband says any colour is better than grey....cheeky monkey.  I did the allergy test straight away, had to wait two days, I've washed it this morning, put no hair products on at all, was worried there might be a reaction if a product was on.  Tomorrow is DDay...hair dye day,  I will post tomorrow and let you know how it went....wish me luck.🤞🤞🤞

I’m not sure about a reaction between products, but I remember my hairdresser saying “dirty” hair takes colour better, and that residue from hair products can also prevent the colour from taking as well. If all goes wrong send hubby out for some Head & Shoulders, or clarifying shampoo if you’re feeling well off! Always nice to know you’ve got a back up plan 😉🤣
I wore an ancient nightie while I was dyeing mine so it didn’t matter if it stained and could easily whip it off when time came to hop into the shower to wash it out. Just follow the instructions to the letter, and you won’t go wrong. Good luck ☘️

Thanks for replying Sally...... not going to do it today, still waiting for an Amazon delivery 5.20pm, suppose to be coming today, knowing our luck the doorbell will go while we're doing it, plus I wanted to put the colour on outside and it's been raining all day.  Ive read its not good to dye on freshly washed hair, your hair needs to build up its natural oils, so perhaps tomorrow would be better anyway.  I will post when it's done. 🤞🤞
  • I’ve added a pic of my hair ( to my last post) after I coloured it the first time. Hope you get on ok tomorrow 🤞🤞🤞

    Your hair looks lovely....
Well it's done!!   I was so nervous when he started doing, my hair is my crowning glory.  I'm really pleased with the result, should of done it weeks ago.  Followed the instructions to the letter, no disaster of getting dye on anything either.  I might end up not having it done at the hairdressers anymore.   Thank you for all your advice.
