Serious issue when cancelling gym membership with Sports Direct!

Sports Direct took money from my account after I cancelled my membership (I was on an contract that did not require notice).

After waiting a month for my complaint to be responded to, I phoned multiple times in one week and had several very frustrating conversations including one where an employee lied about being the manager. During a second conversation with head office I was told that unless the customer cancels before the direct debit is instructed this will happen. When I joined I was told that if I cancelled before the last day of the month payment would not be taken.

When I finally gave up on the company I notified Head Office that I consider this to be a fraudulent activity and was immediately contacted by someone who claimed to be the manager who tried on three occasions to profusely apologise. By this time I was not interested and had instructed the bank to claim my money which you can do through an indemnity claim.

I just want to inform as many people as possible that they must stop direct debits as well as cancel with the company. Also, if possible, please could someone in the know raise this issue with someone who can investigate the legalities of what Sports Direct are doing.

Many thanks.

Should be on Praise, Vent & Warnings.
    It's one of the other:
We will automatically continue collecting the Direct Debit payment amount every month until you cancel your Rolling Term Membership by either giving us written notice before your next Direct Debit payment is taken or when you inform your bank to cancel your Direct Debit for your Membership Fee.

No one here will raise the issue for you, if that's something you want to happen, it's something you will need to do.

How do you know someone claimed to be a manager that wasn't?

  • Ok. Assumed it's a consumer rights thing. Definitely a warning.
Thanks for speaking on behalf or everyone 'there'. I just assumed people responding may have a better idea how to proceed.
I know they weren't the manager because the actual manager (responded via manager email address) told me.

What date did you cancel? As the DD process takes several days.
