No cash from Bank counter unless you want £500

I make all my payments by Contactless/Pin card, so have no ready supply of cash. Elderly neighbours who ask me to get items of shopping for them while I'm shopping have no small change to pay me and I had run out of change to give them, so went to my bank to draw out £100, half in £1s, £2s, £5s etc. Was given the cash but told that as from next week counter staff would only pay out cash if over £500. All other cash only from ATMs,
As the counter clerk gave me the coins in pre-packaged bags, didn't see what the problem was unless they are trying to restrict all use of coins.

I wonder if there might be another reason other than restricting the use of coins?
Let me think...3 -
My neighbour is doing some shopping for me - it's obvious the shops don't want cash so she pays contactless. She doesn't want the cash either so I reimburse her by bank transfer.
This virus will accelerate the end of cash
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill2 -
I agree. We did shopping for elderly in-laws the other day and they paid us back in cash. My first thought was "what am I going to do with that?" I haven't used cash at all since the restrictions began and not a lot before that for a while.Robin9 said:My neighbour is doing some shopping for me - it's obvious the shops don't want cash so she pays contactless. If you have to have cash, and if the min withdrawal is £500, just withdraw £500 and then deposit £400, either at the counter or at a machine. Alternatively, if your neighbours don't have internet banking, ask them to pay you by cheque.
PAYM would also be an option for those with mobile phones, though setting this up could be asking too much.1 -
I do the shopping for a friend who is disabled, as it's difficult for him to do it himself. He pays me by bank transfer, as that's easiest for both of us. He can't get out to get cash and I wouldn't want it anyway. I'd only have to make a special trip to the bank, or post office, to pay it in.

Which bank was this out of curiosity?
There are ways this message though can be presented. I mean money dispensed from an ATM is less likely to have been handled by lots of people and possibly "cleaner" as it has been in the machine for potentially a few days and any virus could have died. Whereas taking money out over the counter is recycled and you are taking out the money that the person in front of you may have just deposited.

I think this is because people are taking no notice of Government advice to stay at home, and bank notices that they are open at the moment for essential banking only.
That does not include transactions that can be done via a Cashpoint or cheque deposit machine.
There are less staff to do the routine stuff.1 -

There are less staff to do the routine stuff. Also there are staff that don’t wish to die as a result of complete unnecessary transactions with people who have no need to visit the branch.5
