I suggest everyone in need of renewing emails

    Chris Heaton-Harris MP

    It's his department.
    I've just fired one off.

DVLA are not responding to any contact via social media. Email via online form is useless as the option you need is not there.

Don't bother. You have to go via your own MP.

I have actually managed to do mine today. Took the complected form to the post office. Guy said I need a cheque or postal order and to post it. I said that DVLA are not taking postal apps at the moment. He asked if I had my licence. yes I did. So with your licence you just hand it over they take a picture and jobs done all for £21.50.
Note that yo u can only do this at certain larger post offices. Think there is a link on the Gov site for these. Just need to wait for it to arrive now.
But this only helps if you can get out.

Well technically you can, but it is £1000 fine and it does affect insurance.

Had I got a Post office with the photo and send facility I would have used that. Our City (yes City) has shut the main post office.  What I ended up doing was paying for a photo print company and then putting that in an envelope with a cover letter and the email codes from the replies DVLA sent me over the last 2 months as they didnt send me a D1/reminder. So I used online and typed up a version of a D1 with all the questions answered in a document, and signed and dated that. They have everything they need including a cheque for £17 and sent Recorded post so proof. I dont care now as I have been assured as long as it is sent I am ok.
Its a disgrace to leave so many people like this. DVLA on Facebook is full of such folk complaining. Surprised Martin Lewis has not done anything.

  • Yes please deal with this one MSE - this is a real issue as more and more people are running out of licence which might be needed in some emergency (e.g. you can be one of a handful of near relatives to attend a funeral of a close relative - my wife wants to do that on 13th May but won't have a valid licence).

Bit of a change of career that, isnt it?
  • Same here. This is my findings. I did the application online as it ran out today. I do not have a valid passport so at the end it says you cannot do online applications as needs a new photograph. I went on to the DVLA photocard page, and it states no postal applications and will not be picked up. So online saying I cant, sending via post you can't either. What is the other option? I am high risk so can't go and get a photo taken. Even if I could there is no point as they wont allow postal applications. Going round in a circle here.

Your only option is to go to a post office that has the facility to take your driving licence (they destroy it and give you a receipt) & the photo. It only takes a few minutes. Link to these is on the DVLA site.

But as you can not go out, then the fact that your licence has run out is a bit of a moot point at the moment. I would keep a check on the DVLA site as they may start taking postal applications again. But then you still need to get to a post office for D1 form.
