Furloughed and want 2nd job

Furloughed. Volunteering but would like second job also.  I’d really like to apply for helping with the farming issue, but it’s unclear whether this affects the furlough payment. Any advice gratefully received. Thank you
just to add my company seems to think I can’t take on additional work so just need some clarity

When furloughed, you can't work for the employer who furloughed you. If your contract of employment permits you can do another job for someone else whilst furloughed.
  • Thank you Jeremy.  Can I ask if that's from a legal standpoint and if so what source?  I'm very much of the same opinion but cannot find anything firm to provide as evidence.  Jeremy535897 said:

That's an odd question. If you mean my point about the contract of employment permitting other jobs, that's basic contract law developed over centuries from statute and case law. If you mean my point about being able to work for someone else for the purpose of the coronavirus job retention scheme, there is no law, just the guidance we currently have. An extract from that guidance at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/claim-for-wage-costs-through-the-coronavirus-job-retention-scheme reads:

"If your employee has more than one job

If your employee has more than one employer they can be furloughed for each job. Each job is separate, and the cap applies to each employer individually."

  • Thank you.  Sorry, I possibly worded it badly.  So my employer I believe has interpreted some of the guidance as you cannot work at all on furlough, not just for their Company, but for any Company.  Such as:

"You’ll still be paid by your employer and pay taxes from your income. You cannot undertake work for your employer while on furlough. We expect the scheme to be up and running by the end of April." and:

"If you currently have more than one employer
You can be put on furlough by one employer and continue to work for another, if it is permitted within your employment contract."

My purpose of asking is to prove to them that it is perfectly legal work for another company as long as it does not contravene anything in my current contract of employment and latterly furlough.  I hope this clarifies and I very much appreciate you taking the time to respond  :)

Not sure if you are still looking for an official source, if so then....

    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-if-you-could-be-covered-by-the-coronavirus-job-retention-scheme

If you currently have more than one employer

You can be put on furlough by one employer and continue to work for another, if it is permitted within your employment contract.

If you’re put on furlough by more than one employer, you’ll receive separate payments from each employer. The 80% of your normal wage up to a £2,500 monthly cap applies to each job.
