Cancelling Cards

in Credit cards
Long, long ago in a far distance galaxy I had a credit card. Being young, stupid and impoverished I didn't handle it too well and Visa eventually told me to send the card back.
Fast forward a decade and I'm much more responsible and would like to apply for another card in order to improve my credit rating. But is my old credit account still open? Does them telling me to send it back and then not communicating with me count as closing the account or do I have to write formally to close it?
And if I do still have to close that account how do I go about doing so? I don't have any of the details and no correspondence from them. It was issued via my Halifax account for which I do have details but I'm not sure how I would go about cancelling the cards if I need to.

Get a free credit report and see if you still have that card open in your file. There are many threads about getting the free report so just do a search. If the report shows that you still own that card, then you need to speak to the bank about it to close the card or might be able to be done via the phone also. I take it that if they only asked you to send the card back, you probably already paid back all the debt? If that is the case and you do not have any other bad credits after that credit card incident then I don't see your credit rating being too bad at all.0

I think they probably would have closed it and history is kept for 6 years so it should have dissapeared by now.
But it would be worth getting all 3 credit reports.
You should be able to get them all for free or the statutory fee of £2 each.
If you go to their websites they will offer you much more expensive services but you are entitled to it for £2 even if you have to hunt a bit for the info.0
