How to remove vinyl tile glue?
[Deleted User]
Hello,
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove glue left behind after pulling up vinyl floor tiles?
It turns out the washing machine has been leaking under the tiles (we think a broken door seal) and so the tiles have been lifted to dry out the floor.
It is a concrete floor that has previously been painted with floor paint.
All suggestions gratefully received so that we can use the utility room again (and so that our cat stops sticking to the floor when going in and out of the cat flap).

might be easier to go over with suitable self levelling compound, it will certainly be quicker too. I'd crape off as much as possible, give it a GOOD sweep and vacuum clean and chuck self levelling compound over it, could be done in 1 - 2 hrs1

Is the glue hard and brittle or soft and tacky? (I assume it is soft and tacky hence the cat sticking to it).
If it is hard and brittle, a scraper like this one will get the glue up: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Deluxe-flooring-scraper-inch-blade/dp/B009G7FXF0
If the glue is soft and tacky, then heat from a hairdryer or heat gun can often soften it more to the point where a decorator's scraper can be use to scrape it off easily. If you have a plastic pail like this: https://www.toolstation.com/mapei-ultimate-showerproof-wall-tile-adhesive-15kg/p57013 you can use the sharp edge on the side of the pail to scrape the glue off the scraper.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.1 -
I have used a heat gun and scraper for that in the past and it worked well1

Try tar and glue remover. Usually used when cleaning tar spots off cars but works really well on left over glue. Halfords sell Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover.1

Thanks for the suggestions.
I did manage to get most of the glue off by using wire wool and then scraping, but there is still a large tacky area. I have thrown on old rug over it for the moment as it is near the cat flap.
We do have a heatgun so I will try using that. If that does not work I will try to buy some glue remover as suggested.
We have a floor standing oil boiler in the same room so we could not use the self levelling compound - good idea though.
