Hi,

I am currently looking at getting 4 years of GAP insurance for a brand new car I bought a couple of weeks ago. I am looking for vehicle replacement GAP insurance. I have got quotes from quite a few places: ALA, click4gap, GAP direct, direct GAP, admiral, totallossgap.

The two that stand out at the moment are DirectGAP (£219 for 4 years) and Total Loss Gap (£183 for 4 years). Has anyone had any experience of either, in terms of service and more importantly actually claiming?

Thanks in advance

I have experience of buying GAP from ALA twice and my experience both times have been exceptional. The first time I bought a policy from then and sold the car after one year and the new car was an old car not worth getting a gap on, ALA gave the option of either getting a refund of the cover money or they keep the money until a new car is bought. I chose for them to keep the money but asked them to refund it after about a year and they immediately refunded it.

The second time I bought GAP from ALA and I ended up claiming when a lorry went into the back of the car. The claim process took less than one week from first contact to receiving the money in my account.

Before you choose who to buy the GAP from, check who the underwriter is because they are the one you will be claiming from if, let's hope not, you need to claim.

The underwriter for total loss gap is: Insurer, Acasta European Insurance Company Limited, 5/5 Crutchett’s Ramp, Gibraltar, GX11 1AA (registered no. 96218),

I have a policy with Totallossgap, as they provide a comprehensive policy at the best price. Also one of the only companies to offer a 5yr policy of vehicle replacement on a used car.

Not had to claim though, so I'm just as in the dark about what that process is like as you.
