Will domestic holidays get even more expensive if overseas travel never properly recovers

It is apparent to me the era of Easyjet etc is probably gone for good (they won't survive the 18-24 months for counties to vaccinate and even think about reopening.) So do people think domestic holidays will fill the cheap holiday void or will they prices rise even more to being the only option easily available.

Market forces will come into play.  Supply and demand.

If you owned a cottage in Cornwall, would you charge a lot more for August bookings than those in June or September when it became apparent you'd have loads more interest in August but find it trickier to get bookings in term time?  Of course you would.

Maybe the much mooted price cap on holidays becomes a major political issue.

I doubt it, and nor should it.  There are a million and one things government should be focussing on before they get round to things as trivial as holidays.  Literally.  They've only tested 2,000 of the 1.2 million NHS staff for the virus so far, despite having four months' notice to date.
  • People will still want to travel, if easyjet were to go under someone else will fill the void. Many places rely on tourism as it is there only revenue so I don't think that that avenue will be closed off for longer than necessary. I'm no economist but I think there are strong arguments for both an increase or decrease to foreign travel. For example, I think Spain and Italy will be trying hard to boost tourism when safe to do so with lower prices,  Greece and its islands I can see prices going up, but that is by no means an educated guess.
In the UK I can only see prices going up, but I'm cynical.
    Make £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023

    Make £2024 in 2024...

    Never is a long time.
Prices will be dictated by market forces. Substantial parts of the country depend on foreign tourists. Think London / Highlands of Scotland. They spend more money than domestic tourists, so book a lot of the pricy hotels. It's difficult to see domestic tourism filling the middle / top end.

I caravan a lot. That has been booming in recent years - look at how many people have motorhomes. I suspect the cost of that will rise.

We'll have to wait and see however. There will always be deals to be found if you look hard enough.

Will their population want tourists through even if it pays the bill. If immunity certificates are required for a holiday companies will all be bust as they cant give people vouchers lasting forever if no vaccine comes.

Did we ever get a vaccine for the Plague? Or the Spanish Flu? All pandemics eventually fizzle out, and then things return to normal.

Much less global travel then - once all the WW1 solders were home nobody travelled much.
