Groupon refuses refund after they cancelled!

Options
I booked a hotel and spa through Groupon and the hotel emailed to say it was cancelled due to COVID rules. Groupon refuses to refund me the money and offered me only “credits” - surely this is illegal? Can I take action? I didn’t pay in credits I paid in cash, and their merchant cancelled! Does anybody know? Don’t trust the company with big purchases!

I've no idea what Groupon's terms are - what do they say?  Best to check before assuming they're acting illegally.
That's the trouble with all of these intermediaries.  All very well when you get a bargain, but just adds another layer of complexity when things go wrong.

As above, what do the Groupon T&Cs say? You may find that you purchased Groupon credit which was then immediately used to procure the hotel/spa break. Therefore your refund would be to Groupon credit.

You bought a voucher from groupon.Which is them redeemed at a retailer.
Hence they can simply credit you for the value of the voucher. As  they did supply what they offered.

    Life in the slow lane
