MOT Extended Road Tax Due

MOT expired end of March but couldn’t get because of Coronavirus. Road Tax also due but can’t renew it online because their records show I don’t have MOT despite the 6 month extension. How can I get road tax?

You get the tax by calling the number on the renewal form.

This is the key point. MOTs due from March 30th on were extended, but those falling due before that date were not. DVSA advice was that if you're able, you should get it tested as normal.

Easy to say now, but that's a good reason not to leave it so close to expiry date to get it tested. You can test from about 30 days prior to expiry and still retain your expiry date (so effectively get 13 months until the next test), I find it's good to do that as it means that if I have anything to fix, I have a bit more time to do it.

If your vehicle tax is due to run out before you can get an MOT

Register your vehicle as off the road (SORN) if all of these apply:

    • your MOT is due to run out (or already has)
    • your vehicle tax is due to run out
    • you cannot get your vehicle tested because you’re self-isolating

You need to do this because you need a valid MOT (unless your vehicle is exempt) to renew your vehicle tax.

When you no longer need to self-isolate

You must not drive your vehicle before you take it to its MOT.

    1. Book your MOT test at an open centre. MOT centres and garages are still allowed to stay open.

    2. Tax your vehicle when it has passed its MOT. Only do this if you had to register it as off the road.

If your MOT was due before 30th March you needed to have it MOTed.

Your point wasn't missed. Just because you've managed to find an open MOT station in your area doesn't mean everyone else can.

No need to worry about road tax. It was abolished in 1937.
