Hotels closed refunds?

If you paid up front for a hotel booking & now because of the coronavirus the hotel has now shut should you be able to get a full refund? Hotel currently only offering for you to rebooked another date within the next year plus if that date is more expensive have to pay the extra cost?

You as a consumer do have a right to receive the services you have paid for.
However, in this circumstance you'll have some difficulty getting your money back. How that happens might depend on what the hotel's financial situation is or whether they are leaning on insurance to help them pay out liabilities.

If you can defer your stay to a later date then great. If not, then get in line for your unsecured refund.

If you paid by some from of credit, you have the right to ask the credit provider for a refund too - after exhausting the supplier route.

It will depend on the terms attached to the booking. If it was able to be cancelled with a refund up to a certain date, and you cancel within that date, you should get your money back. If it was non-refundable (and many hotels offer non-cancellable bookings at a cheaper rate), there's nothing you can do.

Absolutely agree with this IF it was the customer cancelling.
However, in this case, it isn't.
If the hotel isn't open then they can't provide the service paid for.
I fear 7Phils answer is closer to the answer, however -if the hotel is insolvent you'll get nothing, however, if they're still trading then there is a legal obligation to refund.

We are in this position also with 3 hotels booked (2 fully paid for and non refundable) in Corsica in June, we'll get the flights back as long as they are cancelled by easyjet, but as the hotels were paid by debit card, we'll lose the lot -unless there is a legal claim possible from a solvent hotel.
