unauthorised money taken

I would love some advice. I was with car insurance company (right choice insurance brokers) yet cancelled within a month of starting the policy due to poor service with then constantly threatening to cancel my policy ( due to apparently not providing the documentation even though i had numerous times)
Today I noticed. I have a pending transaction from them. I phoned up and they made nothing but excuses, they said it is the cancellation fee and they had sent a letter via recorded delivery (they haven't) This is not a direct debit but a charge on my card. They have retained my card details and took payment, I believe without authorisation. Looking back, I had an email from them regarding the cancellation of the policy and noticed that right at the bottom, in small print stating they would charge me card. Is this something they can do without my consent?
