Corona ignorance/ stupidity?

Hi All. Newbie Here.
Ok I am self employed joiner blah blah. A customer has recently contacted me asking why I have not completed works on their property . Obviously I was shocked that they even asked the question.
The Lady in question said ' I can '  work as the property is empty so therefore there are no issues concerning 'social distancing'.

I disagree with her views as we are in Lockdown?
I am at risk traveling to her property.

What are your thoughts on this?

Ignorance or stupidity?
Thank you

    How important is the work?
I think you probably could do the work. If it is a simple drive to the person house where you arent in contact with anyone and you can finish the job in the one visit I would do it.

If it involved going back and forth all week or for an extended period I would probably leave it.

After all you probably travel to do shopping and other activities. Not really much different. Especially if the person has paid you.
  • I think one of our director's took advice from 2 local mp's last week on Tuesday to ensure the company even as one of the less effected and able to practice social distancing could still run.  Customers seem calmer this week then last but then I wonder if the workmen are maybe getting it more in the neck this week whereas last week the workmen were immune.

We are not in lockdown yet. We are in a half way house. The advice is still if you can not work from home then you can carry on working. Obviously you can not work from home but if the house is unoccupied then there is no issue.

If the property is unoccupied I can't see why you shouldn't do it. How are you at risk travelling to the customer's property? Does it involve taking public transport?

My DH is working - alone - landscaping a very large garden at an unoccupied house, travelling the 5 or so miles there each day. He will continue to do so until he is instructed otherwise (ie full lockdown) as has several months' worth of work to do and right now the weather is conducive.....plus he's getting some good exercise  ;)

OP: It is at your discretion.
If you don't think you cannot travel to work safely, or cannot complete the job safely then you need to call that. The job is on hold.

Your customer might expect more from you but I suggest you work with her and give assurances about completing the job when you can.

The customer could ask someone else to complete the job if the customer thinks the original contract with the OP has been terminated/frustrated. It would be unusual for someone else to do the work, but you never know.

    Contract law still applies.

    • "Free parking" doesn't mean free of rules. Check the rules and if you don't like them, go elsewhere
