Employer refuses to furlough and has made ex s-i-l redundant

My ex son in law an HGV driver has been made redundant by his company they refuse to furlough him as they say there will be no work guarantee after 3 months. They have made others redundant as well. He has pleaded with them to no avail. He has just got a new property and mortgage and doesn't know if he can get any other money other than unemployment benefit. He will try to get another job, this one finished on Friday but may not be easy. Is there any compenation he can get at all. He has only been working for them since last August apparently without a contract.

Sadly, from his point of view, what they are doing is perfectly lawful. They must pay him (or let him work) a week's notice and also pay for any accrued but untaken holiday, but that is all I'm afraid.0

Thank you - it is a shame they cannot furlough him. So does that mean the only thing he can do is claim unemployment benefit.0

He should have no trouble getting another job if he is willing to work in food retail or in care.0
