OP, just to show that once you have a tree it won't be too long a wait, here's my Primova, bare root 3 year old last Feb, not allowed to fruit last year. this is it now, laden with blossom. Obviously not every flower will become an apple, and fruit may need thinning out. It's on M27 stock and just under 6 feet tall, including pot

Do get a dwarfing/bush rootstock if it's growing near your veg patch or you will find that the watering of veg will bring the roots up and into the veg patch.
My first thought was the same as forgotmyname and one of the family apple trees. They should be grouped on the trunk so that they polinate. Otherwise Cox self fertile or Bramley - though it is easier to find people put surplus Bramleys outside their gates for free than it is an eating apple.

Thanks for the advice everyone.  I did go with the Fiesta in the end as it seems very versatile.  After lots of pondering I decided that living in an urban area where everyone has a garden means it is very likely there will be pollinators nearby.  It's being delivered tomorrow which is really exciting.  My garden work (landscaping) is just about complete so the fun is about to start!
