About to buy car via distance selling

I am in contact with a dealer willing to sell me a car £9000 and have it delivered by driver the next day.
It is a pretty big dealer supermarket style.
They want a bank transfer.  I did not ask yet about paying a downpayment by credit card.
Slightly concerned   at what point does the car become mine?
When is the V5 signed over in these circumstances?
I won't have the V5 until the car is delivered.
In the time between my bank transfer anything could happen
They could say sorry no driver available today
This could then drag on and eventually they could go bankrupt and i would have no car and no money.

Would a partial payment by credit card solve the problem?

At this time you are just bonkers doing that and from your other threads you sound like you may nit pick (or there may be a more serious problem) and if so how are you going to get the car back to them should you wish to reject it?

It is one year old remaining 2 years manufacturer warranty.  1000 miles
Same model I just had written off.  As soon as I have the V5 I will be happy.  Assuming it runs perfectly and no reason to think it won't.  I can't see any scratches but I will just have to live with them if there are some minor scratches not in the photos.

When does the car become mine?
How do the car dealers do the ownership transfer in distance selling ?
Isn't the V5 now all done online by the dealer ?

    Thanks

How far away is it? Can you go and have a look at it with the dealer waiting inside?

The car is yours once you hand over the cash and sign the receipt...
As we all know V5 is NOT proof of ownership.

But why are car dealerships still open. They are not included in the list of allowed to open
All retail with notable exceptions Car garages and MOT services
    That is not car sales.
    This from kia..

They shouldn't be and would also be breaking the law by delivering the car as it's not an essential journey.

I think the government got this wrong bicycle shops allowed to stay open, car repairs allowed to stay open, but car sales not allowed... people need to replace their cars it is the same effectively as a "car repair".  It could be classed as essential journey if there is a compelling reason the buyer needs the car...  they could be a keyworker or they could be disabled or they could be out of town and need to go to the shops.

There are a lot of dealers who are still open "by appointment"  or who are "closed"  but who are willing to do the deal by phone. and arrange delivery.

So not until the car is delivered then?
I wouldn't have a V5 until maybe at delivery. but I was asking do the dealers now do the ownership transfer online?  If so, it is  mine once that has been done.

  • Sorry if I've missed it from your other threads, but are you a key worker, then?
(I also thought you were trying to sell your current/old car, not that it'd been a write-off?)
