There’s nothing to worry about or question.
The score is irrelevant and the soft-searches are standard to confirm address information, identity etc. especially when using comparison sites.
  • This is a real life example of the current 'houseparty app' situation. Just because a bad thing happened, it doesn't automatically mean the trigger is what people think it is!

20 soft checks won't make any difference, 100%. Have you not checked for insurance online before? The same thing would've happened then - and you weren't refused then.

I have over 400 soft checks and still get far much more credit than I should have.

You just don't meet their current lending criteria. Lending criteria and scoring is evolving constantly, so even if you were previously a customer it doesn't mean you'd pass now. It could be your income, amount of debt/available credit, number of cards etc. Any number of reasons. Could be the lender has tweaked credit scoring as they are only looking for very low risk bets. You may consider yourself low risk, but that risk might not be low enough.

Stick your details in https://creditcards.moneysavingexpert.com/ - e.g. 0% balance transfer card. If your history is as good as above, you should get tonnes of 70%+ chance cards.  (although it'll be another soft search!)

If you do feel strongly it's the wrong decision, you do have the right to appeal it (although with current issues, that may take longer than usual), details should be included in your decline letter.

Thank you all for your contributions.  As you can see I am still very upset about what has happened  I have established that, when I  did exactly the same exercise last summer, when I renewed my car insurance, there was not a single soft check and that was about three times more expensive than my home insurance.   This time I used 'Compare the Market' for the first time, so they may have different rules. I will certainly never use them again. Unless I can get it changed,  I will never again be able to say that I have never been turned down for credit, so I will have to appeal.

There is really nothing to be upset about. These soft searches from comparison sites are not seen by anyone but you, and will have had absolutely no effect whatsoever on the situation with your utility provider. It is pure coincidence.

No one asks 'have you ever been turned down for credit?' on applications so that is not an issue either. The reality is that almost everyone will have been turned down for credit at one time or another.
