Furlough

Hi all any advice would be greatly appreciated I left my job on 29th march to start a new job on 11th march I worked in my new job for 2 weeks and then the buisness shut,I today recieved correspondence from my employer saying I was not eligible for furlough as I started after 1st march and was advised to go back to my old employer to see if they can do it,I'm so confused as to what my options are

  • Hi Matthew,
I am having the same concerns, my partner started a new job on the 1st March and has been informed that he is not elegible for furlough. We don't really know what to do? The date seems completely arbitrary as it is long before many businesses closed.

I assume you mean 29 February? As things stand only your old employer could furlough you, and they would have to rehire you. All you can do is ask.

Some date had to be chosen, that was in the past at the time the scheme was announced (to stop fraud). It was logical to pick the day before the most recent month end, 28 February 2020. It wasn't arbitrary.
