Airline refund as credit - Insurance Claim?

Hi all,
Like a lot of other people we had a holiday booked in April but it is no longer possible. We were due to travel to the USA and had 2 internal flights with Spirit Airlines booked. These flights are still going ahead at the moment and it looks like they will continue to do so. If I try and cancel them online I only have the option of airline credit, no cash refund. Where do I stand with a travel insurance claim? I need to cancel the flight but will accepting the credit stop me claiming the flight costs on my insurance?
Has anyone had a similar issue?
Very confused...
Cheers,
Jonno

You can't have both the credit for the flights and the money for the flights, for obvious reasons.

Yeah I understand that, but there's no other way of cancelling the flight. Credit isn't any use to us really, I just wondered if maybe someone has done something similar? I wonder if it would be better to leave the flight un-cancelled and then claim?

You need to check your travel insurance policy schedule. Some policies cover cancellation under the current circumstances, some don't.

Or just wait to see if the flights get cancelled, in which case you will probably have a better chance of getting your refund. But I don't know what the legal situation is in the USA - obviously you can't rely on EC261 like you can here.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning
