At the moment it's comes down to a personal choice.
Pay up and hope the holiday is cancelled and get a full refund (at some point), or if it's not cancelled go on the holiday.
Or don't pay and lose the deposit.
There is no hard and fast rule, some people on here have done the former, some that latter.
Also another consideration is travel insurance

The credit card would certainly give you an extra layer of protection

Our flight on 25th april (£2500) was cancelled by VirginAtlantic, we asked for a refund. So far, we are up to about 70 days and have not had anything. At 90 days, we will go to the credit card, but unfortunately its with Virgin Atlantic, and on top of that, we paid off and cancelled the card before this all kicked off.
Has anyone actually received their money back from VirginAtlantic? And does anyone know if we can still claim via a cancelled credit card?
    TIA

I haven't heard anyone using this forum that has got a refund from VA.
Even with a closed account you can still file a claim  I know a few people have done it with their old Tandem card.

  • Virgin cancelled our flight home from Miami 2 days before we were due to fly home leaving us stranded even though myself and my friend were high risk for Covid 19!
After 2 hours waiting on the phone we were told we were in a queue and they didn't know how long we would have to wait, we found out later that our intended flight had still operated our seats obviously been given to some other travellers.
Because we were high risk and also because restaurants and hotels were closing down we decided to try to get home anyway we could and ended up travelling the next night with BA at a horrendous cost to ourselves of 5600 dollars believing that as well as getting our expenses as promised by Virgin they would cover the cost of our additional flights with BA as they couldn't tell us when we could fly home to our worried families
After taking advice from Consumer rights we have sent 3_official letters at a cost of over £12, only to be told by email from Virgin Atlantic that they WON'T cover the cost of our extra flights, even though they left us stranded ,it was 6 days after our booked Virgin flight before their customer service for in touch to ask "if we'd managed to get home"  It appears that not only will they cover our flight costs with BA they haven't offered us our out of pocket exoenses , for which we sent them the receipts!!!
Isn't it time the Government of Media stepped in to sort this company out?
We would have accepted vouchers or a replacement flight which wasn't even offered!
