Eligible for Furlough or not?

Hi, sorry for as new thread but I cannot seem to find an answer to a specific set of circumstances.
My wife left her job of 17 years on 19th February 2020 and started new job on 9th March 2020. She was then made redundant 10 days later due to the current situation.
We realise that she wasn't on the payroll on the 28th February at either company.

The reason for my thread to day is, yesterday (30th March) Judge Rinder was on This Morning with Holly & Phil and he mentioned that if you had signed the contract for the new job that you were eligible for the Furlough scheme as the government want to help everybody. We cannot find anything to prove this and the company are asking for a link so that they can pursue this on her behalf.

We know it's a long shot but under our personal circumstances we will try anything.

Thanks in advance

Martin

The HMRC website where you apply for Furlough isn't up and running yet - they say they expect it to be up and running at the end of April. Not sure how realistic this is, but until it's up and running, it's difficult to know what will / won't be covered.
In the meantime you could look at the "entitledto" website to see if you're eligible for universal credit or JSA.
  • Hi Martin
I'm sorry to hear that you have found yourself in this predicament. From the information that you have given I do not think that your wife is entitled to 'on Furlough' with the new company. You could confirm this by looking at her contract and seeing what the commencement date of employment is stated. This will give you a definitive answer. Best wishes to you both

  • my stepdaughter has been told she is not able to claim furlough - she left one employer on 13/3/20 and started a new job - neither employer will pay her on the scheme - Is that correct

Neither employer has to pay her, the only one that could is the one who’s payroll she was on at the 28th of February, they’re under no obligation to do so though.

It’s not a new word, it’s been used for a while just not commonly in the UK and not the way we’re seeing it used now. The US have had periods when they’ve furloughed government employees, but it’s been different to the current system in that they were forced to take 1 extra day off a week and a 20% pay cut.
