Key workers

Just wandering if anyone can help. My daughter works in a care home. Some of the residents and a member of staff have been infected with the corona virus. My daughters partner has sever asthma and she is worried if she refuses to go to work because she is classed as a key worker she may loose her job. Can the company do that.

Depends on the terms of the contract. Balanced against that are Health and Safety issues for both the care home and her own home. Best to discuss it with her employer rather than here.

    • When on someone else's be it a road, a pavement, a right of way or a property there are rules. Don't assume there are none.
    • "Free parking" doesn't mean free of rules. Check the rules and if you don't like them, go elsewhere

Have you had a read-through of the government guides?
If she is at home or self-isolating, then she may be eligible for statutory sick pay. I don't think Furlough would apply to her, as it doesn't appear to include NHS / Key workers.

From an employment point of view if she is refusing to do her job (and I do completely sympathise with her circumstances) then yes in theory she could lose her job. I’m not saying that they would but it really comes down to the individual company, she needs to have this conversation directly with them.
