Furloughed from 1st March but worked up to the 27th?

I have been furloughed from my job - my furlough letter states it's from the 1st March, but I worked up until the 27th? Seeing as I worked for 95% of the working month, it's surely not right that I will only receive 80% of my salary for March? Particularly as I'm paid a month in arrears. And the handful of colleagues who haven't been furloughed will receive full pay for March. Can my boss claim money for March when we all worked for the majority of the month? It's not morally right that those furloughed won't get full pay for March, and those who haven't been furloughed will, but is there any legal basis to my argument that my furloughed colleagues and myself should get full pay next month?

Employer would be committing fraud if this were to be true. You should be paid your normal wages until you and the employer agree a date from which you started furlough and from that point you complete zero work for that company and receive 80% of your wages or full pay if said employer decides to top it up but they have no obligation to do this.
  • That's what I thought - I will certainly challenge this with my employer - thanks

Be careful however. Yes they are likely to be in the wrong but pace yourself. Gather the relevant documents in writing such as pay slip that shows you got Furlough pay in March even though you done a full working month.

The employer has no rights to give you Furlough and may make you redundant instead if you speak up which us a whole other issue with wrongful dismissal.

Just be savvy and bite your tongue until you have all details concrete.
  • Update - my employer has subsequently moved the date of furlough for all affected staff to the 1st April, meaning that we will all receive full pay plus bonuses for March - so SUCCESS!!

Uncharted territory for everyone. No doubt mistakes and misunderstanding will abound, but at least in this case, the employer has corrected the situation.
