Bank staff

I have worked in the nhs for the past two years for the last 10 months as bank staff. Due to social distancing I have been informed I can no longer work for the foreseeable future. Can I ask for furlong as I won’t be earning and am worried about bill’s etc.

    You should at least be able to ask, but your employer isn't obliged to agree to offer furlough arrangements to you. Is the alternative just redundancy?

    You can only ask what your employer can grant you. It will also depend on your employment contract and what protections you have under employment law.
  • Are you unable to work due to your own health?  As in you are part of the shielding group?

    If not, I’m sure any NHS trust would take you on, they are crying out for staff.  Even if you were clerical bank they would take you as a HCA or porter etc.

    If you actually work directly for the NHS, I thought they couldn't furlough anyone?

    Furlough isn’t intended for or made available to people that are self shielding or have childcare issues etc.from the guidance;

    If you and your employer both agree, your employer might be able to keep you on the payroll if they’re unable to operate or have no work for you to do because of coronavirus (COVID-19). This is known as being ‘on furlough’.

    It’s if the employer is unable to operate, not the employer. I think the NHS would struggle to justify they have no work for anyone to do at the moment, the guidance even goes on to say that 

    The government expects that the scheme will not be used by many public sector organisations, as the majority of public sector employees are continuing to provide essential public services or contribute to the response to the coronavirus outbreak.

    its not clear what your social distancing issues are, if you can work elsewhere then I agree you’d think the NHS would snap you up elsewhere if you’re unable to work due to your own or households personal circumstances unfortunately that means you’d have to look into Universal Credit.
